What role do fiber and pile play in carpeting?

Carpeting, which is made by looping fiber onto a backing, is available in the loop and cut pile styles. The term 'pile' refers to the density of fibers and the height of those fibers. Cut pile styles are the softest, while low loop pile styles offer maximum durability.
